What is Brave?
Brave is a privacy-focused internet browser that blocks ads, trackers, and data collection by default. It offers faster browsing and more anonymity than browsers like Chrome or Safari. Brave also includes a built-in “Private Window with Tor” mode, making it appealing to young users who want to hide their activity.
What parents should watch out for:
Private browsing with Tor mode
Brave’s “Private with Tor” window allows highly anonymous browsing—even accessing parts of the dark web without installing Tor separately.
No visibility into browsing activity
Because Brave doesn’t store cookies or history, parents can’t see what their child is doing online or whether they’re exposed to inappropriate content.
Bypassing content restrictions
Brave may help users access blocked sites, including pirated media, explicit platforms, or unmoderated chat rooms.
Cryptocurrency and Brave Rewards
Brave offers BAT (Basic Attention Token) rewards for viewing ads. While this sounds harmless, kids may not understand cryptocurrency and could be lured into risky interactions or sketchy reward offers.
Advice for parents:
Teach the difference between privacy and secrecy
Help your child understand that digital privacy is good—but hiding risky behavior is different. Brave can be a helpful tool, but it must be used responsibly.
Disable Tor mode if necessary
On desktop, you can turn off Tor browsing in Brave’s settings. On mobile, check which search apps are installed and regularly used.
Talk about crypto with caution
If your child uses Brave Rewards, explain how cryptocurrency works and why it’s not appropriate for minors.
