MeetMe

Minimum age according to Terms of Use: 18+

What is MeetMe?

MeetMe is an app that allows users to meet new people nearby and communicate via messages, video chat, and live streams. It has over 100 million registered users worldwide and uses location data to connect people in geographic proximity.Although it appears to be a social networking app, the platform is primarily geared toward dating and flirting, making it inappropriate for children and teenagers.

What parents should watch out for:

Location-based connections

MeetMe displays users who are nearby, meaning strangers can easily find out where your child is located. This poses serious risks of harassment, stalking, or contact with predators.

Exposure to inappropriate content

Although the app has content guidelines, moderation is limited. Users may be exposed to nudity, sexual content, violence, or hate speech without prior warning.

Anonymous questions through the “AskMe” feature

This function allows anonymous messages, which can easily lead to cyberbullying, provocation, or sexual harassment.

“QuickPick” feature (similar to Tinder)

Users choose who to connect with based solely on profile pictures—encouraging superficial interactions and exposing children to judgment or contact from people with harmful intentions.

Live streaming + virtual gifts = monetized attentio

MeetMe Live lets users stream in real time and receive virtual gifts that can be converted to cash. This blurs the line between entertainment and potential exploitation, especially among vulnerable teens.

Concerning privacy settings

The default privacy settings are not designed to protect underage users. Teens may unintentionally share photos, personal data, or information that can be misused.

Advice for parents

Children and teens should not use this app. While it requires users to be 18+, age verification can be bypassed with a simple click on “Yes.” There is no true verification system.

Talk about digital boundaries and safety

Ask your child if they understand what it means to share their location, why it’s unsafe to talk to strangers, and why virtual gifts aren’t real validation.

If you discover MeetMe on your child’s device—remove it together

Stay calm but firm. Explain the risks, review the account if one exists, and uninstall the app together.

Discuss self-worth and offline value

Teens often seek attention, validation, and acceptance online. Help them understand they don’t need to look for it in the wrong places or from the wrong people.
