What is OnlyFans?
OnlyFans is a platform where users can sell and purchase content through subscriptions—most commonly photos, videos, and livestreams. While it’s used for fitness, cooking, and art, the majority of its content is explicit. Content creators often produce pornography, and subscribers pay monthly fees to access exclusive content.
What parents should watch out for:
Content on OnlyFans is almost always sexual in nature
While there is non-explicit content, the platform is widely recognized as a primary place for selling pornographic material directly and without censorship.
Access is restricted by payment—but children find workarounds
Children may:
- Use a parent’s credit card without permission
- Consume promotional content shared for free
- Ask older peers to help them create accounts
Subscriptions renew automatically every month
If a subscription (e.g. $10/month) is made, it renews unless manually canceled. If a parent is unaware their card was used, months may go by unnoticed—or charges may appear unexplained if the child lied about their purpose.
Potential for additional charges
Beyond basic subscriptions, creators can send locked “Pay-Per-View” content that costs extra. One click can trigger unexpected charges of tens of euros.
Emotional and psychological risks
Adolescents using this platform—either as viewers or aspiring creators—may:
- Develop distorted views of sexuality and relationships
- Experience body image issues or disordered eating
- Suffer from low self-esteem due to comparison
- Be lured into a world that appears glamorous but carries high risks of exploitation and manipulation
Why it’s a problem that children even know about OnlyFans
Because:
- OnlyFans promotion is everywhere—on X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, Telegram, and even TikTok (through coded names, bios, and links).
- Some teens seriously consider becoming creators as a “quick way to make money”—especially girls facing pressure to appear “mature” and “attractive.”
- Parents often find out too late—via strange bank statements, alerts from the bank, or a distressed child unsure how to cancel a subscription.
Financial risks to the family
Unauthorized use of parent’s credit card
If a card is saved on the child’s device (via Google Play, Apple ID, or PayPal), one click is all it takes to subscribe.
Automatic subscription renewals
Children may not understand that “monthly” means recurring payments. Charges can accumulate.
Disguised transactions
Bank statements often don’t list “OnlyFans” clearly. Instead, coded descriptors appear—making it hard for parents to recognize what the charges are for.
Advice for parents
Talk clearly about sexualized content online
Explain the difference between private sexuality and content sold for money, along with the consequences of sharing or viewing explicit material.
Learn about the platform before you talk to your child
If children sense a parent doesn’t understand the topic, they’re less likely to open up. Show that you know what OnlyFans is—without judgment or excessive detail, and with clear boundaries.
Check who your child is following on other platforms (e.g. X, Instagram)
Content creators often promote OnlyFans via other social media platforms. A link may look like a simple “fan page” but lead to explicit material.
Control where and how your card is saved
Remove saved payment data from your child’s devices. Consider mobile carrier, bank, or Google Family Link restrictions.
Ask direct but trusting questions
Questions like, “Have you or anyone you know ever used OnlyFans? Do you know what’s on it?” can open the door to honest conversation. In some cases, children pay for content once, download it, and then resell it to others who can’t pay online.
