What is Reddit?
Reddit is a platform built around communities (called “subreddits”) where users post questions, share opinions, images, and information on various topics—from science and music to video games, health, politics, and everyday life. Each post can be commented on, upvoted, or shared, and users typically remain anonymous. While Reddit can be a source of useful and educational information, it is also home to many communities containing inappropriate, disturbing, or potentially dangerous content, with little moderation to protect younger users.
What parents should watch out for:
Exposure to inappropriate content
Reddit hosts thousands of communities that are not age-filtered. Many forums include explicit sexual content, violence, drug-related material, disturbing images, and inappropriate comments—easily accessible even without registration.
Anonymity = increased risk
Reddit users don’t use real names and don’t reveal their identity. While this protects privacy, it also allows inappropriate behavior without consequences.
Online predators and manipulation
There have been cases of contact between online predators and minors due to Reddit’s relaxed access, private messaging, and lack of moderation mechanisms.
Cyberbullying and hate speech
An anonymous environment can encourage offensive comments, bullying, harassment, and mockery, especially within communities that lack active moderation.
Misinformation and conspiracy theories
Reddit is known for spreading unverified information. Children and teens—whose critical thinking skills are still developing—can easily believe harmful or false content.
Data safety concerns
Although content may appear anonymous, Reddit has experienced data breaches. Children may accidentally share information that could identify them.
Advice for parents
We do not recommend Reddit for children or younger teens
If your child does use the platform, it’s important to:
- Discuss the risks of sharing personal information
- Set clear rules and explain why certain content is unsafe
- Remind them that “internet friends” are not the same as real-life friends
- Use parental controls and time limits
- Stay informed about internet trends and the subreddits your child visits
- Encourage honest, judgment-free conversations based on trust
Children and teens who want to explore topics and engage in discussions should do so in a safer and supervised online environment.
