What are sugar dating apps?
Sugar dating apps connect older, wealthier users (known as sugar daddies or mommies) with younger partners (sugar babies) based on predefined arrangements. These often include financial support, gifts, companionship, and sometimes intimacy. While legal for adults, these apps are dangerous if accessed by minors—which unfortunately happens more often than people realize.
What parents should watch out for:
Minors accessing adult apps
Children and teens may fake their age to create accounts. Some girls as young as 15 or 16 use false information to join these platforms in search of gifts, money, or a “luxury lifestyle”—sometimes driven by insecurity, peer pressure, or addiction.
Risk of sexual exploitation and manipulation
Minors who use such apps expose themselves to adults who may exploit, pressure, or manipulate them into harmful or criminal activity. Human trafficking is a real threat.
Location-based matching
These apps often match users with nearby people. For minors, this means that unknown adults from the same city can find and contact them—raising serious safety concerns.
Fake profiles and scammers
Even adults face risks of financial or emotional scams. Girls may be lured into fake relationships with so-called “Splenda Daddies” (low-budget pretenders) or “Salty Daddies” (manipulators with no real intent to follow through on promises).
Advice for parents:
- Educate children about the real consequences of engaging in sugar dating
- Explain that it’s not a harmless way to make money, but a risky situation with serious physical, emotional, and legal consequences
- Communicate openly without judgment; explore which apps they use and why
- Monitor their online activity and any access to bank or card data
- Clearly define which apps are for adults and why they’re not safe
- Watch for signs of exploitation or secrecy—gifts, cash, secrecy, or drastic behavioral changes
