Minimum age according to Terms of Use: 16+
(Note: More than with most apps, this age limit exists for a serious reason and should not be ignored.)
What is Telegram?
Telegram is a messaging app that emphasizes anonymity, privacy, and minimal moderation. Users can send texts, photos, videos, files, and create groups with up to 200,000 members, as well as channels with unlimited followers. Because of its features—including secret chats and self-destructing messages—Telegram has become popular among those who want to communicate without oversight, which poses risks for younger users.
What parents should watch out for:
Secret chats and self-destructing messages
Users can send messages, photos, and videos that automatically delete from both devices, leaving no digital trace. This enables children to receive or send content that parents may never see.
Weak moderation and high anonymity
Telegram groups and channels often lack effective moderation. Users may be exposed to violent, pornographic, propagandist, or criminal content—including the distribution of explicit materials.
Interaction with strangers
Unlike apps like WhatsApp that rely on contact lists, Telegram allows communication via usernames—no prior connection needed. Predators can easily reach out to children.
Channels with harmful content and disinformation
There are public channels that spread conspiracy theories, fake news, hate speech, and violent content. Without proper experience, a child can quickly become part of a community that promotes harmful values.
Limited parental control options
Telegram offers no built-in parental tools, making it difficult for parents to monitor their child’s activity on the platform.
Advice for parents
Have clear and honest conversations about the risk
Explain why Telegram is not a safe platform—not to ban it, but out of concern for your child’s safety. Emphasize the dangers of secret chats and unknown contacts.
There’s no such thing as an “internet friend”
Clarify the difference between friends known in real life and strangers who may seem kind online but have hidden intentions.
If the app is already installed, check the settings
Although we recommend children avoid using this app, if they already have it:
- Review who can contact them
- Check their access to public channels
- See if they use secret chats
Use devices in shared space
Never underestimate what can happen in “just a few minutes of privacy.” Major risks often occur during these unmonitored moments.
Stay informed about online trends and new app features
Telegram constantly adds new capabilities, including AI-generated messages, real-time translation, fake vaults, and advanced identity-hiding features.
