What is Yubo?
Yubo is a social app that allows young people to connect with others through direct messaging, group chats, and live streaming. It operates similarly to dating apps: users swipe left or right to choose who they want to connect with. Formerly known as “Yellow,” Yubo markets itself as a platform for making friends but retains features reminiscent of dating platforms.
What parents should watch out for:
Risk of contact with strangers
Yubo allows connections with complete strangers, including the ability to send messages and join live video chats. This increases the risk of grooming, manipulation, and exposure to inappropriate content.
Live streams encourage risky self-exposure
The app includes Yubo TV, where users can stream live and chat with up to 10 people. Extra features unlock after 10 minutes of streaming, which may push kids to stay live longer, increasing potential risks.
Location-based matching and sharing
Users can find others nearby. If privacy settings are not configured properly, a child’s location may be visible and accessible to strangers.
No reliable age verification
Yubo does not strictly verify age, meaning younger users can sign up using false birth dates. Likewise, adults can pose as teenagers to contact minors.
Paid features promote openness to strangers
The “Elite Pack” allows users to see who viewed their profile, message non-friends, and access more data—encouraging interaction with a wider range of strangers.
Advice for parents:
- Talk about the risks of interacting with strangers online
- Monitor app usage and check privacy settings together
- Encourage open dialogue without judgment if anything online upsets your child
- Learn the app’s features and language to foster trust and informed discussion
