What is Zepeto?
Zepeto is an app where users create 3D avatars that resemble them and personalize them with clothes, movements, and facial features. These avatars are used to explore virtual worlds, chat with others, and create content. While the platform seems fun and creative—especially for young girls interested in fashion and self-expression—it also poses safety risks that parents should be aware of.
What parents should watch out for:
Chatting with strangers
Zepeto allows users to create chat rooms and connect with others worldwide, including adults. Some users build worlds that appear innocent but include sexualized interactions or inappropriate roleplay.
Inappropriate content masked by cute visuals
While the app looks child-friendly, some interactions involve flirty or suggestive behavior between avatars that could represent children and adults.
Lack of parental control
Zepeto has limited privacy settings and no real parental control tools. Users can communicate and share content freely, including with strangers.
In-app purchases
Zepeto encourages buying virtual clothes, poses, and animations. Kids may spend money—often without realizing how quickly it adds up—if a payment method is connected to the account.
Fake identities and roleplay
Users can play characters that do not reflect their real identities. This opens the door to manipulation, flirty behavior, or grooming masked as harmless roleplay
Key technical aspects:
- Private messaging, public comments, and world creation
- Users can visit and interact in others’ virtual spaces
- Global user visibility with minimal restrictions
Advice for parents:
Talk about virtual identitie
Help your child understand that a “cute” app can be used in inappropriate ways. Ask who they chat with, what worlds they visit, and who their online “friends” are.
Disable messages from strangers
Set privacy settings to limit who can send messages or friend requests.
Monitor purchases
Make sure no card is linked to the account and explain how online spending works.
Set clear boundaries
Agree on daily screen time, acceptable features, and safe sharing habits. Many kids post avatar videos mimicking real-life situations—set guidelines around that too.
